Inherited IRA & Legacy Tax Impact Calculator

Model how much tax you and your heirs may pay across two generations. Compare “do nothing” with a Roth conversion strategy under the SECURE Act 10-year rule.

How it works

Enter your current tax-deferred and Roth balances, your planned conversion amount (if any), and your heirs' shares and income. The calculator projects your balances to an assumed death age, then simulates the 10-year inherited IRA withdrawal for each heir and estimates federal income tax for both you and them. You get a side-by-side comparison: total tax with no conversions vs. with conversions.

Federal estimates use fixed 2026 ordinary-income brackets and base standard deductions. Future calendar years reuse these values as a projection assumption, not future statutory law. Credits, itemized deductions and additional age-based deductions are not included.

Your situation (owner)

Used to project balances at inheritance
SS, pension, etc. (excluding IRA)

Roth conversion plan (optional)

0 = no conversions

Heirs (inherited IRA 10-year rule)

Enter up to 4 heirs. Ages are current ages and are projected to inheritance. Share % should total 100. Each heir's “other income” is their existing taxable income when they take distributions.

Tip: set one heir to 100% and others to 0% to model a single beneficiary.

Inherited IRA assumptions

Unknown status is unsupported. Confirm the actual required beginning date, not just the owner's RMD age. Owner projections here use Table III only; qualifying spouse joint-life cases are not supported.

Before the owner's required beginning date, these are optional withdrawal scenarios and no annual distribution is required before year 10. After the required beginning date, supported noneligible designated beneficiaries receive annual Table I minimums in years 1–9 and must empty the account by the end of year 10. Trusts, estates, and unlisted beneficiary classes remain unsupported.

Projection timing assumes beginning-of-year withdrawals and growth of the remaining balance into the next year; year 10 fully distributes the remaining balance. Statutory deadlines do not require this particular withdrawal date.
